Traditional Multiplayer Will be Back in DOOM Eternal and Will be Developed Entirely In-House

The DOOM Eternal news out of QuakeCon just keeps coming, this time in regards to multiplayer.

When speaking with Polygon while at QuakeCon, id Software’s Marty Stratton confirmed that the standard competitive multiplayer from 2016’s DOOM will be returning in DOOM Eternal, though they aren’t ready to talk much about that. “The Invasion stuff is just kind of one of the ways that we’re going to make the DOOM experience social. But we’re not really going deep into that. We are working on a PvP component. It is new. It’s not an extension of what we did last time. So it’s new,” Stratton said.

He went on to specify that the multiplayer will developed entirely in-house at id Software this time around, something which wasn’t done with DOOM. Stratton stated, “It is something we’re developing internally, which we didn’t do last time. I think players are gonna really enjoy it.” Developer Certain Affinity partnered with id Software the first time around to help work on the multiplayer portion of the game.

It seems that id Software has lots of lofty goals for DOOM Eternal when including the addition of the Invasion multiplayer and the advent of post-launch campaign DLC. Clearly, id Sofware has listened a lot to fans since DOOM launched in 2016 and is now trying to make the sequel be everything that players have wanted and more.

DOOM Eternal doesn’t have a release date right now but it’ll be arriving on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
