The Surge 2 is coming, folks. In 2019, we will get a new adventure and battle to face but with no exact release date we’re all left twiddling our thumbs in anticipation. Thankfully, developer Deck 13 alongside Focus Home Interactive have anticipated the painful waiting process and have released a new expansion DLC for The Surge. Titled The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented, this 9-episode expansion throws players into a wild west survival game where the stakes are high and some new challenges await. If you need to know more about The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented, then you’ll need to read below and find out our full review on it. It all begins on what to expect with The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented.
The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented adds a wild west motif to The Surge and provides some new challenges to jump into. Players will once again need to face off against mechanical monstrosities to survive and gain new armor sets exclusive to The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented. Additionally, The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented has modifiers that create new trials for players making each episode good for replaying multiple times through. The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is available for the low price of $9.99 and will give newcomers and veterans alike more to enjoy! Enter The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented and see if you can be a sci-fi cowboy!
The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented throws Warren into a very strange western setting when he enters and abandoned quality assurance lab. Doctor Rischboter apparently made this area to challenge workers in a strange wild west arena, but since CREO has fallen apart, so has the facility. Now Warren must do battle across 9 different episodes to face down new threats and new areas all while gaining much needed new armor to help his survival rise up a few notches. Can Warren become the cowboy he’s never dreamed of being? Find out now in The Surge: The Good, the bad and the Augmented!
Seeing as this is the second expansion DLC for The Surge, we’re going to skip our usual recap of what to expect in terms of gameplay. Instead, we’re going to jump into the meat and potatoes that makes up The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented and what you’re going to be entering in. The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is divided into 9 singular episodes that can be either unlocked individually through completion of specific parts of the main game—the first three unlock after the first major boss battle—but are fully accessible for those going through new game+. The main concept of The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is simple, enter a western-like TV show stage filled with challenges and battles to eventually face off against a so-called challenger. Along the way, you’ll earn new gear and will find that The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented has some clever ways of making you want to replay sections over and over again for new armor sets and weapons.
As per usual, players will need to face off against various baddies that want nothing more to rip Warren’s new legs off his body but in The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented things aren’t so simple as usual. When you enter an episode, you’ll notice that there are usually strange trials and tribulations to conquer on your way to the Challenger and after you beat the episode, you gain modifiers which change the settings of the entire episode for chances at better gear but at the consequence of having to adhere to the modifiers rules. This makes for some fun battles in The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented and equally will make the grind—which there’s a whole ton of—a bit more manageable. Dying also must be avoided as death during the episode makes you lose all your items gained and restarts you at the beginning. When you get to the challenger, however, you will be given chances to restart if during the run to the boss you were lucky to nab some Lucky Coins which act as extra lives during the boss fight. The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented feels more like a gimmick piece of DLC, but equally, the feeling of more straight forward battles and arenas isn’t a bad one and gave us some extra time with a game we enjoyed more often than not.
We do have some issues with The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented and while they aren’t bad, they are problems to be noted out. The first major problem with The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is the fact that you need to have completed the game for all 9 episodes to unlock instantly or you will need to get through the main game to unlock each episode and that might require some time for newcomers or if you were like us and lost our data for The Surge causing us to have to restart the game from nearly scratch. The second problem we noticed in The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is that there are some bugs here and there that caused us to face some strange deaths. One bug caused our instant kill attack to launch us off the side of train cart arena in episode 1. We also had the game crash not once but twice which in turn made us restart the episode from the beginning. These problems might only be minor, but we noticed them on our end and wanted to make sure you guys were aware of them.
The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented isn’t a huge piece of DLC like the A Walk in the Park DLC but it does offer some reason to return to The Surge once more. The challenge room concepts is both fun and incredibly tough—like seriously tough if you’re under leveled—which makes the 9 episode DLC feel worth the price tag of $9.99. We do wish there was a bit more of a story as we enjoyed the concepts of this crazy TV-like world but The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented works well and will be perfect for anyone itching to return to the hellish world Warren has had to survive through. We recommend buying The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented to keep you busy till The Surge 2 comes out and to test your skills in the challenge rooms with the numerous unlockable modifiers that offer a nice change of pace from the usual focus seen in The Surge.
We didn’t think we had anything left to do in The Surge honestly. Thankfully though, The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented gives fans—and us—a reason to return to Warren’s desperate battle for survival to earn new armor sets, weapons and to just take on new bosses and challenges. The Surge 2 is coming soon but we know our skills we be tested in that new installment so playing The Surge: The Good, the Bad and the Augmented is a nice way to pass the time and keep our skills fresh.
