Some Nintendo games won’t support cloud saves

Nintendo Switch Online’s cloud save feature skips games like Splatoon 2 as a move to prevent cheating

When the Nintendo Switch Online service launches later this month, cloud saving will be one of the features included for those who sign up for its $20/year services. However, as was discovered last week, not all Switch games are eligible for that particular feature.

As discovered by a ResetERA user (via Ars Technica), the Nintendo official page for the Splatoon 2 starter pack has the following message at the bottom:

“Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online play. This game does not support Save Data Cloud backup.”

Upon additional digging, users found the same message on the pages for the following games:

  • Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu
  • Pokemon Let’s Go! Eevee
  • FIFA 19
  • Dead Cells
  • Dark Souls: Remastered

In a follow-up statement, Nintendo justified this by saying, “In certain games, this feature would make it possible to, for example, regain items that had been traded to other players, or revert to a higher online multiplayer ranking that had been lost,” and also said that Splatoon 2’s lack of cloud saves was “to ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings.”

When it launches, cloud saves as a part of the Nintendo Switch Online service will be the only way to back up saves on the Nintendo Switch in case of a system being lost, stolen, or damaged.
