The Ghibli Museum is planning a new exhibit to focus on how directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata bring their films to life through use of color. The “Eiga o Nuru Shigoto” exhibition will launch on November 17 and include examples of painted animation cels and anecdotes from Ghibli’s staff, including Ponyo and Spirited Away color designer Michiyo Yasuda.
The exhibit will also exemplify how the staff met directors’ demands in a time when color was not as boundless as it is now. The advent of CGI and digital color techniques give current animators more freedom but prior to those techniques’ widespread use, animation staff had to interpret Miyazaki or Takahata’s vision with limited resources.
LAWSON locations will begin selling admission tickets on October 10. The museum debuted another a new exhibition on September 12 to celebrate the release of the picture book, Totoro no Umareta Tokoro (Where Totoro Was Born).
