Chris Evans won’t be returning as Captain America after Avengers 4

Apologies for what I’m about to tell you, but it sounds an awful lot like Captain American (Chris Evans) is going to die in the next Avengers movies. We’re not sure how else to take this tweet from Evans, who just finished filming the sequel to the tremendously successful Avengers: Infinity War:

Sure, Evans could simply be saying a heartfelt thank you to everyone on set, but we doubt it. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the most handsome man in the Marvel Extended Universe (with apologies to Chris Hemsworth) has to die — Captain American could just be written out of the story — but it’s the feeling we’re getting. Evans backed up this view when speaking to The New York Times earlier this year, saying he didn’t have any plans to return to the Avengers franchise once the sequel to Infinity War was over. “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War are both among the best films Marvel has put since this whole superhero revival started with Iron Man in 2008. (God, it feels like it’s been going on for so much longer than that.) Let’s at least hope that the final Avengers movie is a fitting last call for Evans’ work as the character.

However, Chris Evans leaving the MCU doesn’t mean Captain America won’t be around. He could be recast, or, more likely, give his title to another, as happens in the comics. But who? Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is a good candidate, now that he’s been rehabilitated. In the comics, Sam Wilson (Falcon) replaced Cap when he retired. Wilson is played by Anthony Mackie on the big screen. Either of those could work well.

For now, the world can preemptively mourn the passing the skinny kid from Brooklyn who took super soldier serum, got swoll, killed Nazis, called people out on swearing and grew a magnificent beard. Goodbye eventually, Chris Evans’ Captain America. We are going to have missed you.
